Devil’s Thumb Ranch expressed a need for more guest rooms and venues for a wide variety of events and services. A steep hillside overlooking the resort’s main lodge and activity center would provide the perfect site for the addition of the High Lonesome Lodge, complete with 35 guest rooms and suites, a banquet hall and kitchen, two secluded outdoor wedding venues and a private dining space / wine grotto. To remain sensitive to the unique nature of the existing site, much effort was taken to incorporate the new foundation and superstructure into the existing landscape. With the sloping hillside to its back, the 4,500 SF banquet space - a large, repurposed two-story timber barn - stands tall as the centerpiece of the new lodge plan. The east wall of the barn captures majestic views of the Continental Divide, providing a breathtaking backdrop for weddings and other events. To the West, guest room wings extend from the barn to the north and south, with additional wings built higher upslope into a naturally occurring ridge line. This schematic approach required far less excavation during construction and maximized views to the East from every guest room in the High Lonesome Lodge. The shared spaces of this venue are nestled within the plan, offering their own unique views and characteristics for small and large gatherings. Finally, at the lowest level of the lodge structure is the Suraboza Wine Grotto, an intimate gathering space carved out of the landscape and finely detailed for fine dining and wine tasting for its guests.
